USB – pendrive sounds, is recognised but no drive associated

In XP, whatever USB device I put in, in any of the 3 ports, XP recognises by sound and in the “Safely Remove Hardware” application, but no drive is ever asociated with it
I have tried removing the battery and replacing it – no effect
