USB Port does not recognize device

    Locked

    by stladmiral ·

This is the situation. Bought Compaq V5000 used. USB port does not recognize device msg pops up when device is pluged in. I have paid $100 to computer techs at shops that cannot fix problem. Last owner said a new motherboard was installed. Device manager says port is working. USB ports have been uninstalled, re-installed, Chipset has also been uninstalled and reinstalled. There is power because it charged a digital picture frame for a key chain. Please help. Getting ready to throw this piece of &*^% in the trash.

      Enough Power?

I did not look up the system. But, the first thing to do is verify if the ports are USB 2.0 compliant, and that there are no power limitations.

If the ports are not USB 2.0, add a USB 2.0 card, and then plug the device into the 2.0 card ports.

If the ports are USB 2.0, try a powered USB 2.0 Hub just to make sure that you have enough power for the device.

Next, have you verified that the device is supported by the operating system (version of Windows) that you are running?

Have you installed the software / driver for the device?

I do have some USB devices that refuse to work with my primary Windows XP system.

Other USB devices that work just fine on a XP system refuse to work on a Vista system.

Most of the time, devices that will not work on a system once they have enough power have either the wrong driver for the version of Windows you are running. Or, the driver and the USB host controller are not compatible.

While my front panel ports are connected to USB 2.0 ports on my motherboard, some devices refuse to function with the case wiring that is not USB 2.0 compliant. Plug them into a rear port and they work just fine.
