USB ports don’t recognize anything pluggd in

by joskin . Updated 16 years, 4 months ago

On an HP Pavilion Notebook dv8301nr with WinXP SP3 update

At one point we tried to install the Microsoft LifeCam NX-6000 camera and the installation failed. After that we were unable to uninstall satisfactorily and two of the four USB ports stopped beeping and responding.

Our initial suggestion was to uninstall the USB ports in Device Manager and have the system reinstall. They seem to reinstall okay, but now none of the four USB ports work.

Every time I boot up the machine it tries to install device drivers for two “unknown” devices in the Device Manager. If I click locate drivers it just goes to limbo until I cancel the install.

I cannot see any USB devices (used to have an HP Camera) on the “My Computer” selection. I ran Driver Whiz and it recognizes the MS LifeCam as missing drivers as well as other device no longer on the system

I would much prefer not to have reinstall WINXP altogether. I need to find out if and how uninstalling USB drivers completely and reinstalling them will help fix the problem.
