This is my first post so please bear with me…
I had to install a new motherboard (a Biostar U8668-D) in a computer and did a repair install of Windows XP Pro w/SP2. Everything went fine until I tried to install a USB network adapter. I installed the drivers and plugged in the adapter like I have done before and got an error indicating that the device is unrecognized. I tried plugging it into different ports on the front and back, and got the same error. I then tried a second USB network adapter with the same result. I then tried attaching a USB flash drive and got the same error. All three of the USB devices work in other computers. I looked in the Device Manager and all the Ports and Root Hubs are listed without errors or warnings. I tried uninstalling the USB drivers in safe mode and letting windows reinstall the drivers on reboot. When that did not work, I looked on Biostar’s site for USB drivers. Biostar’s site recommended using the ones that came with SP1. I went to Via’s site and downloaded and installed the latest version of their drivers (the motherboard uses a Via chipset.) I finally shut down the computer and let it try to boot with the USB flash drive attached. This time I did not see an error message, but the flash drive was not showing up. I checked the Device Manager and it had a warning on the USB mass storage device (it evidently recognized what the device was this time.) I opened up the properties of the device and it indicated that the device failed to start.
Everything else seems to be working on the computer. I am fairly certain that the USB ports on the motherboard are working. I am sure that the reinstall has done something to the Windows settings, but I have not been able to figure it out so I am asking for help. Other than doing a clean install of Windows, is there anything else that I can try?
