USB ports suddenly stopped working...

By ClaytonB543 ·
I have been through many google searches trying to find a solution to my problem. I was using my laptop earlier today and everything was just great. I plugged in my Logitech Webcam to use on Skype with my fiancee and it did not recognize it and it wasn't working with Skype. I was curious was to what was going on. I use a Logitech wireless mouse with a USB adapter. It was working perfectly fine. I unplugged the mouse adapter and plugged in the webcam. No dice. So I tried various ports and now none of them work. Not even with my mouse. I began my search on Google. I've uninstalled them many times, then rebooted. Nothing worked. I saw that removing the power supply and battery will allow the mother board to lose power and "reboot" therefore putting my USB ports back in action, however, after 30 mins of an unplugged batter, they still weren't working. I have absolutely no idea what else to do. Can someone please help me. I'm not computer savvy at all, but I'm not a complete dummy either :) so if someone could please help me, I'd greatly appreciate it. Or else my laptop is taking a trip out to the front yard, right through the window.

Oh and on another note: I went into the Device Manager in the Control Panel and it says that all of my USB ports and controllers are working perfectly. But under the section near the top labeled "Imaging Devices" I noticed that my webcam had an "attention" sign near it. It says "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)" I, then, plugged in my sister's webcam (same model) and it said the same thing. Both of the webcams work on her computer, but not mine.

One more thing: Remember my mouse that worked perfectly fine? Well now it doesn't work at all and in the "Device Manager" it says it works fine!

Well I'm ready to pull out my hair so can someone please help.

I run Microsoft Windows VISTA Ultimate although I'm not sure of the Service Pack.

The fact that your mouse stopped working suggests that you have lost the 5 volt power at your USB ports. Most likely from a device drawing too much current.

As the web cam works on a different PC, it may be more that the 5 volt power on your laptop choose that moment to fail.

Try a small power only USB device such as a lamp or a cooling fan and see if that works. If not, that verifies that the 5 volt power is gone.

If the 5 volt USB power has failed, some devices may work if you connect a powered hub between your computer and the devices.

If 5 volt USB power is present, there may have been debris in the USB connector for the web cam that damaged your USB connectors.

Possible Registry Error?

by eheinr007 In reply to USB ports suddenly stoppe ...

This sounds remarkably like a registry error I encountered recently when my DVD drives quit appearing as useable devices. When I pasted the error message "Windows cannot load ... (Code ..)" into Google I was directed to a page at Microsoft Technet where there was a walkthrough of how to edit the registry to force the computer to reinstall the drivers.

deinstall ALL USB devices

by eugen.wirsing In reply to USB ports suddenly stoppe ...

try this:
open hardware manager and deinstall all USB entires and then seek new hardware. It may take you one or two - or even three reboots, but all USB ports and devices will be reinstalled probably automatically.

If the problem is not in the voltage i suggest reinstalling the USB port drivers too.
