USB/Printer Problem

By swilthorn ·
I have an HP All-in-One printer. It is installed but the computer does not recognize that it is plugged in. It has worked in the past but somehow got uninstalled. Now, when I go through the installation process, it tells me to plug in the printer into the USB port. I do and it does not realize I've done anything. My USB external drive works fine so I know it is not the USB port. Anyone have help?

HP Printer problem possible solution

by jlach In reply to USB/Printer Problem

I imagine that the original post 02/2006 has been dealt with by now but I had an almost identical problem with my HP Photosmart 7350.
I installed the printer on a new computer under a software virtualization program and then decided to install the software directly. After uninstalling I was unable to re-install. I did notice that if my sound was turned up that when I plugged the USB cable into the computer that Windows XP sounded the "Device Failed to Connect" alarm.
After talking with both HP and Microsoft I was no further ahead in solving the problem. I finally noticed that all HP files started with the letters hph and then the rest of the file name. I did a search of the registry for all references of hph and found several instances of keys pointing to hp drivers that were not removed by the uninstall process. I removed the references and was able to install my printer.
