USB Scanner problem

By greg.gotcher ·
I have a Microtek 4800 USB Scanner that locks up my system on reboot or startup. If I unplug the scanner and restart Windows 98 comes up just fine. I can plug the scanner and use it just fine. If I shutdown or restart with the scanner plugged in it locks up again. Any idea why this could be happening?

USB Scanner problem

Some Ideas to check:

If this is a W98 and not a W98SE system, installing the W98 service pack can help.

Check for updated USB drivers for your system / motherboard.
If a name brand system, start with the manufacture.
If not a name brand, either download and run the Free Belarc Adviser (www.belarc.com) or use the motherboard ID tools from either www.wimsbios.com
or www.motherboards.org
to identify the motherboard / chip-set.
Both sites have links to most motherboard manufactures.

You might also want to check if the PC mfg has a BIOS update that improves USB performance.

If the scanner is USB 2.0 compliant, you may be best off to install a PCI USB 2.0 card, and disable the on-board USB ports.

Your motherboard may not provide enough power on the USB lines for the scanner. Try using a powered USB hub between the PC and the scanner.

Go to the following link to get the most updated driver for this scanner:

It is probably just a driver conflict with Win98.

hope this helps

Check your BIOS version and settings for USB/PnP support options.
