USB Scanner Won't Install

By ojmj ·
Pentium III; 400 mHz, 128 RAM. USB, Win 98(SE).

Non-profit organization's computer. HP 5200 scanner. Has both USB and parallel ports.

Scanner worked using USB before Nimda virus hit the computer. Nimda has been removed. OS has been re-installed. Scanner wasn't recognized. Uninstalled the scanner software, unplugged the scanner and rebooted (several times) to allow the OS to recognize the configuration. Attempted to reinstall the scanner using the supplied installation disk. The computer will not ever recognize the scanner as being there, even though the cables are securely attached and the power cord is plugged in. There aren't any indications of conflicts anywhere when I check it in System Properties > Device Manager.

Any ideas?

quick idea: bios and mainboard patches ...

check in the bios that the usb is enabled (if applicable) and that pnp op.sys is selected (again if applicable, i don't know what bios it is)

and by patches, either a bios update or a chipset driver ...

good lunch !

Sorry, but neither of these ideas helped.

USB Scanner Won't Install

by Lizzy In reply to USB Scanner Won't Install

Two things to try. One, when I have installed HP5300 scanners in the past, they came with a rectangular plug that, when plugged in looked like it had power to the scanner because the light in the scanner kept blinking on and off. It would not be recognized by windows USB or parallel. I reversed how the plug was inserted into the surge protector, and it was immediately recognized. However, none of my 5200 scanners had this type of plug but maybe yours came later with the new plug that cost me hours of troubleshooting. Second and probably you already checked this, in the control panel, system applet, make sure that the USB is installed. Win95 had to have this installed by the user, but perhaps your Win98 didn't catch it during install. It was on the Win98 CD under tools. Good luck.

Thanks, but I had already done both of these. Still haven't found the solution, but since the question is off the front page, it probably won't be answered. I appreciate your time.
