USB to Serial Adapter does not workr

I have installed several usb to serial adapters on a HP Desktop with windows vista home premium and none of them will work. the system say it installed ok but will not connection to serial device. when i try to change port no with the properties of the device it say that all com ports above the one installed are busy. i have no com port on this machine so what is busy. is there something about the hp desktop. any help will be appreciated. henry

It would help if you provided some details of why you need a serial port.

Many software programs just will not work with the virtual serial port that a USB to serial adapter uses.

Depending on the serial device and the limitations of the software, your only option may be a PCI serial adapter.

As to the issue of assigning a port number, Windows can get pretty darn finicky about allowing you to use some serial port numbers. The range of usable ports may even be coded into the driver for the USB adapter.
