USB to Serial Connection

By dan_martin18 ·
I have a new Compaq Presario which comes with only USB ports and no serial ports. I use a (communications) program at work that uses either COM1 or COM2. I've tried to use a USB to Serial converting cable, but I need to redirect? USB/COM port to COM1 or COM2. Are there any utilities out there that will do this?

USB to Serial Connection

There are 2 differnet USB to Serial converters. One sells for about $70 CDN, and is designed for older PDAs, in which the newer software can be told to look at the USB port. Like Palms, etc. The other, and what you need is an actual USB-Serial Port.they sell for about $140 CDN, and once they're installed, Windows sees them as a COM port, and you can tell it which port to be. example: Belkin f5u101

I thought the Belkin could. I don't know any other method, unless there is a different brand that allows you to specify that the virtual com port is 1 or 2.

USB to Serial Connection

Thanks for your help. Unfortuately I should have explained a little further. I have tried a device like the Belkin f5u101 but it creates a virtual com port which is where my problem lies. The program I'm using only allows me to select Com1 or 2 there is no way for me to select the virtual com port. So, I need something that will allow me to make the virtual com port a com1 or 2. Thanks again.
