USB Version 1.1

By Bradley.Shorrock ·
I am looking at purchasing some memory sticks to use with some old Windows 98 laptops. I have USB version 1.1 and have been told that they wont conntect to larger MB memory sticks.

Will I be able to purchase 256Mb memory sticks to use with this version of software.

Also, does having the drivers make any difference.

I'm not aware of any file or drive size limits with USB 1.1.

The USB drives will only run slower than with USB 2.

Yes, for Windows 98 you need to install the driver for the memory stick PRIOR to connecting the drive.

I looked over the tech papers on the USB flash drives at Kingston, and found no references to size limitations on W98 or USB 1.1

USB 2.0 relates to the USB devices you can use with your computer....

It has nothing to do with your Memory Chips...

Memory Chip limitaion if any are related to Motherboard's capabilities...

hope it helps.

Before you go and buy any memory for your laptops, you need to know what memory they can use. So Get on the net and download the motherboard manuals for each type of lap top. This will tell you what you can install. Its as simple as that. !!

It is the USB port on older machines that is USB 1.1. Many 256 MB memory sticks are compatible with USB 1.1. I would make sure that it is stated in writing. The one I would buy is the Crucial Gizmo. It also comes with a cable which is handy for older desktops with the USB port in the back.
