Alright, I know there is no such thing as a USB Virus but my machine is behaving like one. Recently my Microsoft 6000 Laser USB mouse would start to lock up. Around the same time, I didn’t notice until later, my APC UPS link would stop.
The ONLY thing that would work would be a restart.
At first I thought it was just my mouse, but looking into Mouse properties, the entire mouse and driver were gone, only to be found again (and working) on reset. There were no problems on Device Manager and nothing in my error logs showing a problem. So I suspected my USB connection but every other device appeared to be seen and worked?! So I plugged in my mouse in another USB port – on a different hookup (off a game controller add-on port). Windows would see it for a bit and then the mouse would freeze up and NOTHING on that port could be seen. Hence it behaved like a virus. Soon as I moved it – other devices which seemed to work fine started disappearing as well.
Started to look into windows services. For some reason my PnP, my Univeral PnP, my HID (Human Interface Device) and RPC services were either turned off, on manual or set to automatic and not started. So I reset them all to automatic and clicked on Start. My HID, which controls the mouse and the APC UPS can not connect because some unknown service did not start or cannot be found.
Since the problem has been going on for about 2 weeks but getting progressively worse (like a virus?!) I decided to do a system restore back to two weeks. In the end – I still have USB services that work then disappear. I may have to do a more major restore point or full reinstall.
Just the way the system forgets about my mouse, then other USB connections and how they interact (or don’t as the case may be) when changing plugs, has the symptoms of a virus but I know it is something else. The question is – how do I treat this – full system install or look at the board itself (ASUS SLI Deluxe 939) as the culprit?
Right now I’m stuck with a PS/2 mouse (even with a USB-PS/2 adapter my mouse can’t be seen). And a PS/2 mouse in gaming for Call of Duty 4 – just isn’t cutting it. Beside flaky USB functioning for all devices is starting to get annoying!
Your suggestions please!
