User accounts cannot send faxes-2K3 SBS

By kevbhafner ·
We are having an unusual problem with the Shared Fax services on a Win 2K3 SBS implementation. Everything was functioning normally till late friday afternoon, since then for some reason we cannot send outgoing faxes through the shared fax service. We can recieve faxes and they routed just fine. To make things interesting the administrator account has no problem sending faxes from any computer on the network. So I originally thought it might be an odd permissions issue. I check permissions on the fax "printer" and the permissions were wide open. What else makes this interesting is the issue occured sometime after 2:00 pm Friday. I do not believe there were any changes made to the server. Not exactly sure where to go with this problem, the entire tech staff is a stumped. Are there other places I should check to adjust permissions? Or any other troubleshooting ideas that we should be loking at?

Did you check Share Permissions and NTFS permissions?

Were any new GPO's placed in the domain?

Since it works for the adminsitrator and no one else, this is usually a clear sign that it is a rights issue.

best place to look is the MS SBS web site.

or the SBS community forums.

Further, what might be the problem depends upon what version of SBS you have. Standard, Premium [with ISA]. ISA server can effectively block outbound traffic for users. In addition is the H323 gateway service in ISA server. Theres some new patches and security fixes for it.

You should have some error showing in your event viewer when a user attempts to use the shared fax service and that service fails. I would venture that if an administrator can send out a fax and domain users can not, some policy is prohibiting the users from using the shared service. Double check domain local GP and if you have ISA server double check that domain users group is allowed in Site and Content rules and Access policies.
