User accounts were deleted

By wcp ·
A client has a peer to peer network with Windows 2K pro workstations and a Windows 98SE.
On one Windows 2K pro workstation, a number of accounts along with associated files were deleted by accident.

Now the MS Office 2000 Pro is not working even though Winword.exe, Excel.exe and other files are under "Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office".
When Winword.exe is double clicked, an error message pops up.
Reinstalling MS Office Pro has failed with error message.
I will post more with detailed error messages.

In the mean time, any idea what might have happened and how to make the MS office work?
Any idea how to retrieve Outlook e-mail messages of a particular account assuming deleted files could be retrieved?

Hi, I don't think I can help will all of your problems but the one about Outlook (and Express) is quite easy especially on Win2k you need to create new accounts for the users then 'Import' messages found in their old message location.

for Outlook Express...
C:\Documents and Settings\<USER NAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{LONG CODE HERE}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

for Outlook ...
C:\Documents and Settings\USER NAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
(Normally a file called Outlook Ost)

In fact it may be a good idea to move these/this files somewhere temporarily first so you can't replace them with the new account settings.

Importing is really easy.

With Office Pro why not reinstall, it will probably be quicker in the long run, it could take you days trying to find the problem and already has, but a fresh install will only take you about 20 minutes.

Good luck with the user account, the only thing I can think of, off the top of my head is to re-input them.

Thanks for your advice.
None of the MS kb 295823, 236597,or 294975 worked. Somehow, deleting user accounts affected some of the programs (I do not know how). We decided to back up whatever we could and start all over.

For the User accounts and MsOffice, create the user accounts again and configure them as close to the original as possible. Then reinstall Office and any other software involved.
You can also try to install Office in a different location in your hard disk to try to "unlink" any previous installations with the new one. After it's done and if it works, you can delete the Program Files/Microsoft Office directories and clean the registry if neccessary.

We could not find a way to either uninstall or reinstall MS Office.

I did not try your advice but it may be worth trying next time. Thanks for your advice, though.

while trying to fix the installation may take a long time, I would rather backup the data and format the diska and reinstall from scratch. it will take 2 hours or so.

something really weird/bad happened over there, you dont know what else has changed so better go for the fresh install.

Error message when Winword.exe (Excel, Outlook..) was double clicked is
?This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows installer patch package?

Reinstalling MS Office fails with the following error message
?This package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows installer patch package? which is almost same as the above.

I did a MS KB search and found an article (236597). I will try its method and see what happens.

I do appreciate your helpful suggestions, though.
