user authentication Novell/Win AD

By Amanda_dunn ·
I am looking to migrate my users away from using Novell user authentication to Windows Active Directory authentication. Has anyone done this and do you have any docs that might help?

Are users currently logging in to Novell and then to the local workstation? If that is the case, I assume they don't have accounts in AD. It is probably just easiest to create accounts manually in AD, remove the Novell client from each person's PC, add their PC to the domain, add the correct domain group to the local PC's group and then get the user to log in to AD. You will have to copy the local profile for the user to the profile created for the domain ID if you want the personal information to transfer.

If you are pretty crafty, you can write a script to run via the Novell login script to add the PC to the domain (NETDOM), apply the correct domain groups to the PC (NET LOCAL GROUP) and copy the old profile to the new. Then it's just a matter of removing the Novell client.

If you want to automate the creation of domain accounts, can probably do an LDIF export from eDirectory and import that list of users into AD. I have never tried this so I can't comment on success/failure.
