user database in NT

By rhiegen ·
Hello People,

I have to type eight hundred users in NT Server. It's very hard. So I thought how could I make a program to record the users data into the users database in the NT server. So what files store the user names and permissions in WinNT/2000 and where are they? Is it possible to do what I intend to do, is there another great solution? Are these files of Access type?

Thank you

There are ways to do this..one of the is a program on the resoucse kit. Another thing you could do is check out www.microsoft.com/technet they might have some useful information.

Good Luck!

PS If you have an exchange server running on this network it can be done in a few minutes.

I would recommend that you consider using the net user command-line utility in a batch file. The command-line info is available in local help of both nt4.0 and 2000.It has many parameters to be considered. It includes username/password/domain/expires/fullname/homedir/paswordchg/profilepath/scriptpath......and a bunch more. You really only need to have the username unique....the rest can be cut and pasted for each succesive user,of course you want to select that the user has to change password during first logon. To speed up the creation of the batch file, use excel to fill in the information that you want to enter in each column.I once accomplished this for 300 users with the assistance of a very good secretary in about 2 hours. You then can export the info to a delimeted text file called whatever.bat.When you run it with proper permissions you will add a lot of users very quickly and save a lot of mouse work! If you have Exchange, you should implement the same batch file build technique , but let exchange do the import for you using the Import user function. It will accomplish much more for you by doing both the nt user database and exchange database simultaneously.Email me if you need further explanation.

If you have the userlist in an Access database you can use mailmerge capabilities to create a batch file to automate user creation using either NET USER or the ResKit utility ADDUSERS
syntax is
NET USER username password /add
You can also add options like comments, Full name, password expiry options etc.
ADDUSERS is also similar. Will help further if required through this channel.
