By computerusageco ·
The user name has been forgotten client running Win98 computer. It is a peer-to-peer with WinXP XP for the server. Without the profile fo the user on the Win98 machine, the it does not connect to the workgroup on the server. How can I recover theuser name and password for the Win98 client computer?

The user name should be an account located on the XP machine. Use the admin account to reset the password.

On the win98 computer, look for *.pwl ... that will get you the username of anyone who has logged on this computer. You can delete the file and essentially setup a new user/password on your WinXP box, then have the user login to the win98 box.If you want to recover the current username/password, you can give the tools mentioned in the previous answers a try, but it's easier with win98/winxp just to recreate it. Especially since win98 is not ntfs and there's no real user/password security per se.

Thanks for your help. I like your solution but I had already worked it out with the response from above.
