    User Profile Issue?

    Locked

    by tobrahs ·

I have a laptop running XP Pro SP2, workgroup setting, anti-virus and windows are up to date. I have a Linksys Wireless router WKPC54G with adapter WPC54G. The lap is obtaining IP address from the router’s DHCP server. There are 4 user profiles, all of which have administrator rights. I disabled the Windows Firewall to assist in the troubleshooting of the problem.

User Profile #1 is able to see the router and hit the internet no problem via Internet Explorer.

User Profile #2 is able to receive email via Outlook Express but is unable to get to the internet. User #2 is able to ping the router.

Users #3 & #4 can’t do squat!! Linksys support said it was a hardware profiles issue with the laptop. Does anyone concur or have any suggestions?

    Thanks for your time!!

try setting up a specific IP. There could be dhcp failure on the router.

DeN inc., I was able to release and renew the IP address from all users so I don’t think it is a dhcp issue.

        Thanks!

that is weird one. i do not see why profiles would do this…i would just start t-hooting each profile. i would start with the one that works. Start/Run/cmd ipconfig and examine the results. i would ping the gateway and the dns server, just for the halibut. i would ping the isp mail servers too. and send and recv test email with outlook express.
then i would logon with #2 and do same. #2’s symptoms are classic ‘no valid dhcp address’ so i would do start/run/cmd/ipconfig and ipconfig /release then /renew to see if i am getting valid ip address from dhcp server…then ping everything. dns server (if you have vaild lan ip address and gateway this is next most likely problem imho). maybe isp’s dns server just down at the moment you. if you can’t ping by name try to ping something by ip address. ping mail servers. confirm email. what is the exact error message? anything in the event logs?

**Users #1 & 4 both are able to get out to the internet and are working as they should. #2 & #3 still have the connectivity issue.** From #2 & #3 I am able to ping the router & the mail servers!! The only error message is when I attempt to use Internet Explorer I, “cannot reach server.” The event logs are clean.

Have you tried copying the profile of the one that works to one that doesn’t? You can do this in My Computer, Properties, Advanced, User Profiles.

It looks like we are narrowing down the problem. Why would I be able to ping mail servers and not be able to use IE for the internet? I have checked all the Internet Options and they appear to be good. What am I missing?

Problem solved. It appears there is proxy software on the local machine. I deselected and reselected the proxy and everything came back as it should. Sorry for the lame question. I appreciate the responses.

      Thank you
