User Variables and Scripts

What is the easiest way to set user variables using a login script. These variables only need to be present for certain users on these NT 4.0 clients. I have tried a generic ‘set’ command in the script, but to no avail.

We currently use login scripts, and I would like to be able to just add a few more lines and have the job done!
