Again, I am an NT Tech supporting a small Novell network. I have one server, yet using monitor>Connections on the console, the server shows connected twice, and now 3 times with a * in front of the server name. What does this mean and can it be causing any problems?
Secondly when a user logs on he also shows up twice, once with an * in front of his user name and once without. What does this mean?

The connections that have a * in front of them are unauthenticated and are not using up any license connections. The actual connections that are licensed and are taking up from your license total) do not have a * in front of them. The server connections will be as a result of the server needing to connect to the NDS tree, and as a result of some apps. For example, a backup program will require a logged in connection, and may well use its own connection for each backup job. It's all part of the Netware model, and perfectly normal (I am assuming you are running Netware 4.x or later, as this is part of the NDS (directory services) model and NOT the earlier bindery one.)
Thank you for your help, i was wondering though why the server shows up three times? when before it was only showing up twice? No big deal I guess I just curious!!
CONNECTIONS WITH * MEANS AUTHENTICATED (BUT NOT CONSUMING A LICENSE) BECAUSE THERE'S NO OPEN FILE FROM THE FILE SERVER, BUT IF THE CLIENT CLICK A WORD DOCUMENT AND OPENS IF FOR READING, THE WILL NOT BE PROMPTED FOR A USER& PASSWORD (DUE TO THE FACT THAT HE IS AUTHENTICATED) AN HE WILL START CONSUMING A LICENSE,BY OPENING A NEW CONNECTION AND LETTING THE ONE WITH THE * UNTOUCHED. WHY 3 TIMES? YOU MAY HAVE: 1.- ZENWORKS OR MANAGEWISE 2.- ONE CONNECTION IS BROKEN (RESETED BY THE USER) 3.- THE USER LOGGED INTO MORE THAN 1 PC.
Thanks for your help, however its the server that also has usually 2 connections open with * (which has always been) and lately 3 connections. I delete the third connection when I see it and so far no effect. It is a very simple set up with 8 stations accessing only one server. Any comments???
