Users can't see installed printer

By twhite ·
We recently added some Windows 2000 machines to our network. If I login to one of these machines and add a network printer through the Add Printer Wizard, everything works fine. But when another user logs on, the printer disappears. Microsofts Knowledge Base says to install service pack 3. I did, but it did not help. Help!!

I ran into this problem with a Windows 2000 SP2 deployment. If a user added a printer it was only for that user, not the machine. Go to a command prompt and type 'rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /?'. This should bring up a text box with all of the switches. I believe that the /ga adds a machine printer.
I haven't had a chance to take a look at SP3 yet so I cannot speak to the reference in the knowledge base article. Hope this helps.

Once you have installed the printer and the drivers exists on the computer the user can then reinstall the printer under their profile and it will work correctly.

This is the way that printers work under NT/2K/XP. Each user who logs into a machine has his/her own profile. It is in this profile that the individual printer settings are kept.
This way, user BOB can have PRINTERX be his default printer, whereasuser TOM can have PRINTERY be his default printer, all on the exact same machine!

Please read Technet article Q252388 on how to set up a Default Printer for ALL USERS on the same machine:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q252388
(please remove any spaces)

It works for NT/2K/XP

hope this helps

You don't mention whether or not you installed the printer as an administrator or not. In win2k you need to install printers logged on as administrator if you want everyone using that machine to see it. There is a difference between installing a printer as Joe Company with admin rights and an administrator installing the printer under a local profile. Hope this is clear.

This is profile related issue. You need to add the printer in the administrator profile and it should show for all users.
