Users get “file locked or in use”message

Within the last few weeks in my multi Win2K server, single domain environment several users have randomly received the message that a MS Office file is locked or in use. Several of the workstations are Windows and Office XP and the problems all seem to involve the XP users. However it is not consistent among all users, certain files, or on certain servers.
