Uses of XML?

By montgomm ·
We hear so much about the benefits of XML, but our company has yet to encounter a business situation where XML was required or we considered using it. None of our business associate interfaces have mentioned or requested that we share data via XML.
Still, we feel we may be missing something or not fully understanding XML. Does anyone have any suggestions on where we can review some real-world uses of XML to better solve a business need or any other suggestions on how or why we should be exploring/using XML?

Currently, all our interfaces with our business associates use defined fixed length record formats.

Thank you

If you build it, they will come...

Just kidding. I understand completely what you mean. For years I had ignored XML, but one good way of knowing where to use it would be to learn more about the language. I would suggest going to and learning about XML and XSL, while you are there also look at CSS. As far as real world examples are concerned there is a new article on this site about building a Shopping Cart application using XML. Also look at, and goto MSDN and serach for XML examples or go to XML Core within MSDN. Hope this help, reply back if you need more help or e-mail me at
