Using FTP

By BriannaRivas ·
I have been trying to FTP to a server using the DNS name and the IP address but I receive an unknown host message. I try to ping the server using both methods but I receive request timed out. Is there something I need to do on my Server in order to be able to FTP to this server. I am able to FTP to other servers with no problem and I never had to do anything on My Server in order to FTP. Please let me know if there is something to configure in order to achieve this. Thank you

Using FTP

If you cannot ping the server or reach it with ftp, it is probably either down or behind a firewall. Try using tracert to the IP address. If you get within what looks like one hop and then see timeouts, the server is probably behind a firewall. In that case, if you are supposed to be allowed on that server, contact the site admin there and discuss how to get access.

Note that if the server IP you have is non-table (10.x.x.x or 176.16.x.x or 192.168.x.x)
then it is CERTAINLY behind a firewall, and the admin will have to tell you how to access it.

Good luck.
