By Tackle56 ·
I have a 98SE machine setup as a server, gateway for cable / DSL modem....would like to use NT4 machine to logonto the LAN and have IP accesss, via the 98SE server...can I log into the 98's Lan? Steps to accomplish? I am not familar with using NT4to logonto a NETBEUI / TCPIP 95/98 network.

Using NTWS4_SP6 w/ 98SE ISP Sharing

Hi,
Internet sharing in Windows 98 computers uses Network Address Translation (NAT) to enable multiple computers with invalid internet IP addresses to share a single valid IP address. In order for you to use this feature, your LAN needs to be using the TCP/IP protocol rather than NETBEUI.
You mentioned two things that are not very clear.
1)"I have a 98SE machine setup as a server"
2)"would like to use NT4 machine to logonto the LAN "

To my understanding, you are trying to create a single logon authentication network. This can be accomplished by installing and configuring and NT Server as a PDC of a domain (Let 's name this domain "DOMAIN_TACLE56"). Configur all you workstations including your Windows 98se machine to be members of this domain. Make sure your network is running smoothly before doing so....i.e. test for connectivity using utilities such as PING and TRACERT.
P.S. You do not need an NT domain to be able to use the Internet Sharing utility in Win 98 SE.

To configure you NT machines to use Internet Sharing, configure the gateway of your NT machines to be the IP address of your Win 98 machine.
