Using NTWS4_SP6 w/ 98SE ISP Sharing

What you need to do is:
Setup two network cards on you 98se machine. However, I was told by my cable provider that 98 has problems with two cards, and I did have problems. I now run w2k as my gateway pc. This would be better for the security.

The card connected to your modem has the public ip address, probably via dhcp.

Set up the other card with a private ip ie, 192.168.0.1 subnet 255.255.255.0
Set up the network card in the NT box with 192.168.0.2, have the gateway as 192.168.0.1, andspecify the DNS servers of your cable provider. Get these by running winipcfg from your 98 machine. If you upgrade to w2k, you will need to run ipconfig from your cmd prompt.

In your network settings for your cable, you will need to enable ICS. When this happens it will reset your ip on that nic. Just change it back.

If your cable provider just used generic names such as mail, news, proxy etc, you may need to set the domain suffix on your nt pc. you can identify what that is via the winipcfg command.

Be careful with print/file sharing. Disable it on the cable nic. Also, if you run w2k, you can remove the permissions to everyone on the local lan, and then ensure that a hacker cant use it to get to you NT box.

You also need to use a crossover cable between the two pcs unless you are using a hub.

This is all fresh in my mind because I have just done it this week!
