Using older programs with Windows XP

I just upgraded to Windows XP Pro and have a program I want to continue using from a company that is now out of business. Is there a way to “trick” the program into thinking it’s still running on Windows 98SE? Also, my HP printer (deskjet 3100) doesn’t have free downloadable drivers from the HP site. Won’t the Windows 2000 drivers work?
