Using Two Internet Broadband Connections In My Home Network

by x-it guy . Updated 18 years, 6 months ago

This is sort of a question, but I’d like to generate some discussion as well.

1. I have two Internet broadband connections (using two different technologies)into my home on two different phone lines from the same Telco. One is DSL the other is called U-Verse (now you know who the telco is).

2. I have a home net with the usual stuff printers, laptops, wired and wireless.

3. I can use the two broadband connections separately, one for work and one for personal use.

BUT, what I’d like to do is increase the reliability and throughput by utilizing in an integrated fashion.

I’d like to implement a router between the two gateway routers that could:
A. Look at the relative utilization (and QOS) of each broadband connection and route new sessions appropriately.
B. Detect when one of the broadband connections is down and route to the other.

I’ve read some esoteric references that this can be done (using a Linux router) without the telco routers needing to carry my routes, because each new session (maybe session is the wrong term, after all I’m a manager not a tech guy LOL) that is established will continue to be carried through the same gateway.

CAN IT BE DONE, AND WHY AREN’T MORE PEOPLE DOING IT?

ANYWAY, WHAT SAY YE COLLECTIVE TECH REPUBLIC COMMUNITY?!?!
