A straight through cable is used to connect a hub or a switch to a workstation or network printer. You would use a crossover cable to connect two hubs or switches together. Some hubs and switches have an uplink port so that you can connect them together with a straight cable. Look at this link to see how to make a straight and crossover cable.

The old rule of thumb is you use a straight through cable to connect dissimilar devices (workstation to hub) and a crossover cable to connect similar devices (hub to hub, workstation to workstation, etc).
