UTP or Coax for Video Distribution

By UI_J ·
I am setting up a Corporate TV information System. I want to run cable from Digital Media Engine (server) to Video Distribution Amplifier and out to 5 HDTV or Plasma displays. Total distance within 100 meters (300 ft). Should I use UTP cat 5 or Coax ? Wondering about signal loss and picture quality. Running both powerpoint and video files thru presentation software.

UTP or Coax for Video Distribution

For Video, I would recommend coax.

First of all, the signal is single ended not balanced like phone or network signals.
(That is why network signals work with UTP.)

Secondly, I suspect that your connections to equipment are going to be standard "F" style video connectors. It is a real pain to terminate UTP to "F" connectors properly.

Is this a digital transmission of pure analog video ? Video needs 75 ohm (RG59) coax cable. Digital transmission on TCP/IP would need the highest bandwidth possible, Ethenet on RG58 coax cable is limited to 10BASE2 (10Mhz). Cat 5 UTP cable is far better taking easily 100BaseT norm and abobe.

Thanks, Coax (RG59) seems like the way to go from VDA to HDTV or Plasma displays. I am still researching Video Card to put in Server. TV Out or DVI ? S video or Component cables ? Will it make much difference what connects from server to Video Distribution Amplifier ?
