V.92 modem disconnecting problems

By hedger48 ·
Win98 with P4, 1.6G
I have a generic v.92 modem that keeps disconnecting me from my ISP after 1 min to 10 min (usually closer to 1 minute). Message is :your connection has been interrupted.
Does this have anything to do with ISP support of v.92 protocol? Maybe network settings?
My modem config is not set to fast. I updated my telephon.ini file. Modem driver seems to be up to date. whats up?
Thanks
Kelly

Typical causes of random dropping connections are due to noise on the phone line, a defective modem with a weak carrier or by leaving call waiting signaling service enabled.

Depending on the OS, you may have hardware or software issues.

Hardware:

See which IRQ this device is sharing communications with. See if you can move the device to a non-shared IRQ. See if it operates any better when not shared.

The modem itself may be bad. Have you tried it on another computer?

The telephone line may have problems. Have you tried it on a second line in a different physical location?

What speed are you connecting at? Have you checked with other modem users in your area to see how much better/worse they connect at? (Sometimes within local areas -- esp. old communities -- will have older wiring that really needs to be replaced).

Software:

Make sure that you have installed the proper drivers for your OS and the modem.

Make sure that the device is configured properly.

Who is your ISP? Some of them, yes, may have difficulties with v.92. See if you can connect with hyperterminal (ie essentially using the modem) to another non-isp or web site -- in other words, see if you can hyperterminal into your local libraries online catalog. If you work fine with hyperterminal, then your modem hardware is fine.

You might try checking the Dial Up Connection to see if the Modem is set to disconnect if idle for a specified time. Your modem will disconnect if your surfing or downloading because it is considered idle time. Clear the checkmark then try again.

Check with your ISP also - it may be that your modem is set to use "Modem on Hold" but your ISP does not support that function. If that is the case, you need to either change your modem back to a V90 or see if you can get a "hotfix" that will causeit to stop disconnecting.
