Greetings,
I have a Win2K box with no service packs. Attempted to install SP4 and during extraction I get the message “the system cannot find the file specified”. In another case, I was attempting to reload IE6 SP1 and after a while during installation I get a similar message about not being able to find a file (the file was supposed to be in Documents and Settings\user\local settings\temp. But when I browse there, the path and file are present.
Another strange symptom, after launching IE, as soon as I click anywhere in IE, whether the scroll bar or within the window, IE just exits. No message, no error. It just closes.
What I have done is complete antivirus with several programs, Adaware, Hijack This, Spyware Doctor, Spybot. Memory diagnostics, HD diagnostics. Even did an OS repair. I own my own shop and have seen some strange s*it over the years but this one has me stumped. I have a suspicion there is a security issue, but can’t pinpoint it. The user I am logged in as is an administrator. Any ideas?
Brian
