    Varying Modem Connection Speeds

    Locked

I am trying to understand why I can connect at speeds of up to 48,800 at times and at other times can only connect at 33,400. The same ISP and same PC using the same phone line but different connection speeds. I would appreciate any suggestions or ideas.

Many variables affect the connection speed.

      1. Line integrety and distance between the Computer and Central Office. (a bad connection anywhere will affect service)

      2. Type of Central Office switching equipment. (old step by step/newer electronic switch)

      3. How many Central Offices you go through and the connections between them.

      4. ISP connection to the Central Office.

      5. Modem at ISP and its connection.

Considering the above factors, if you have a 56K modem and are very far from the ISP or Central Office, getting a decent connection seems impossible.

BTW – 28800 to 53333, 2 to 4 -Central Offices, Copper/Fiber, 10+ miles, depending on the route of the particular call

I am aware that all of the factors mentioned will afftect the connection speed, but I can’t explain the variance in connection speeds at different times.

Just like when you make a telephone call, sometimes you get a nice clean line, other times you get static and/or echo. If the modem has to resend the info. because of errors, it will slow down your connection speed. You never know what you’re going to get.

It all depends on the before mentioned factors and which route is taken to get from you to the ISP.

2 telephone calls just minutes apart will not always that the same route. If all circuits are busy on the fiber the call may bounce off another switch or 2 to get the call through.
