VB Compile Error when opening Word97

By bakny2000 ·
Received the following error when opening Word97: "Microsoft Visual Basic - Compile error in hidden module: AutoExec." Almost all 150 users received this error when opening and closing Word. Just started this morning. Checked VB Help, Word Help-- can't find a clue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It looks like a macro is trying to run at startup of Word (that's what AutoExec is, the auto-execute macro), but can't because of bad code.

Hold down shift while you start Word. If no message pops up, that's definitely it. Holding down shift while starting Word disables auto macros at startup.

Look at Tools, Macro, Macros and see if there's a macro called AutoExec.
Could maybe be caused by a macro virus.

Sure sounds like a virus, especially if you have not written the AutoExec macro. The first thing that I would do is delete normal.dot (or rename it). Word will create a new one when you start the application. Then, make sure that you run/update/install a virus scan application.

Good luck!
