VB.NET: Extracting System Information

By r_kinlay ·
Hi. I am writting a small utility in VB.NET to extract system information for the purposes of comparing user sys info to requirements for an accounting program. I realise that in VB.NET I can access certain registry settings to get info on the CPU, OS etc, but I need further info on screen resolution, total memory, installed applications etc, which I cannot find in the registry.

VB6 included a number of API calls to extract such info but I cant seem to find how to do the same in VB.NET using new technologie available in that platform. Additionally, users will have a variety of operating systems, and the relevant information will be under different folders in the registry, so my first idea, whilst it may be workable, may require quite cumbersome code.

Anyone out there have any further ideas or suggestions on how I may implement this program????

Windows API

I know it might be a tad intimidating to a VB user, but you can discover anything you need to know thru Windows API (and use it via interop in .NET)

eg. ::GetSystemInfo()
==> info on processor, memory etc.
eg. ::GetSystemMetrics()
==> screen resolution and a host of other info

in .NET the namespace System.Environment contains a lot of useful functions.

installed software info is in the Registry under well known standard keys.
