Veritas Backup Exec 8.5 Not Playing Ball

By Steve Penn ·
Hi Guys,

We have BE8.5 running on NT4 sp6a. We are using a Sony TSL autoloader 8mm AIT tape drive.

I am trying to set up the back up jobs so that Veritas will intelligently backup all the Monday jobs to a 'Monday' tape, all the Tuesday jobs toa 'Tuesday' tape and so on.

I have set up Media Sets Monday through to Friday and labelled 1 tape for each day of the week. I also set the actual backup job to backup on Monday to destination 'Monday' in the Media Set option, but it doesnt work.
Q. Where am I going wrong? or Is this simply not possible?

Any help appreciated,

regards,

Steve.

check to see when the tapes are 'expired' or available to rewrite. you probably have it set for a week (logical!) experiment with changing it to 6 days...good luck

When I first started with BUexec I tried doing the same thing.

It is actually more trouble then it is worth.

I have BUexec attached to a 30 DLT tape autoloading tape library. And on another system I have it attached to 4 8mm dat drives.

With the tape library, I fill it and then let bu exec manage it. I set the overwrite protection level to a month.

With the 8mm dat's, I have one of my staff assigned to it. Every day the manually eject the tapes and put in a new set. The tapes themselves are labeled for the day the belong to. But they all belong to the same media set. So I only need to create 1 backup job, and put a tape in and bu exec will use it.

You don't even need to inventory the drives.

So if I was you, I wouldsave myself time. If you really think about it. As long as the tapes are labeled so they correspond to what the actual tape label is. You won't have any problem finding the tape regardless of what media set it is in.

I have a nearly exact match for your configuration...substitute an Exabyte EZ17-M2 autochanger and you're there. In BE go to the Devices tab and expand your drive/changer out so you can see everything. What you want to do is to define each slot asa sepaprate partition and then assign your independant jobs to backup to the right partition. Right click on the object just below "Changer" and choose "Configure Partitions", from there you need to break out each slot in the changer magazine into its own partition (I have mine labeled 0-6, but you may be able to name them now...not sure), save it and then go to your Monday job. Set the destination partition to the slot you want your Monday tapes to go in, Tuesday job goes to the Tuesday slotand so on. As an added note I set my overwrite protection level to "none" and have never missed a beat. My Monday jobs will backup to whatever tape I have in my Monday slot, regardless of whether its the weekly tape, Thursday or Monday...so make sure you've got the right tape in the right slot. I purchased an additional magazine and have a 2 full sets of M-Sat tapes as well as 6 offsites and full quarterly offsites as well (the auditors love this).

Hope this helps...I've been using this setup for close to 2 years now and its always worked well for me.
