Veritas Backup Exec Mailbox Backup

By DemonGP ·
Hi,

I have a problem here. We are running Backup Exec ver 8 on one of our Exchange Servers to do the Exchange backups. The problem is that we cannot get it to do PST(mailbox) backups. Everytime we try to connect to a server, it asks for a Unique mailbox to connect to. I have created a mailbox specifically for that use, and made the primary NT account the same one we use for the backup services. Thing is, it does not want to accept it, whatever i do. I have even installed Outlook 2000 on the server, and created a profile with the Backup mailbox as the primary mailbox, to no avail. I would appreciate any help in this matter.

We are running Windows NT server 4.0 and Microsoft Exchange 5.5 on a dual Pentium III 450 with 192 MB ram.

Hi.

It sounds like a problem I have had before.

The way I fixed it was to uninstall Outlook, then I installed Windows Messaging (done through Add remove programs, Windows Setup). Then reload the NT service pack. You can then install Outlook again, and it should work.

If Windows Messaging has never been installed onto a machine, BackupExec doesn't seem to recognise that there is a MAPI client installed on the box.

If this does not work, let me know as I have several other possibilities.

Hope this helps.
Regards.

One other thing... have you created a mail profile in Outlook with the same name as the mailbox, and set this profile up to point to the mailbox used for backups? You must also set this as the default profile.

I faced this thing before. It is not because of outlook or other issues, it is about your mailbox permission. Do grant your backup service mailbox to be able to access to all other mailboxes. This make sence cause in order to backup, you need to access all the mailboxes. Do have a try,

cheers!

The account that we use to do the backup is in the Administrators and the Domain Admins groups, so it has all the neccesary permissions

I have to agree with Answer 2 that this has nothing to do with Outlook. I have encountered the similar situation when we first installed Veritas into our NT4 Server running Exchange 5.5.

This is how I do it.

Step 1 - Create a user account on NT with member of Administrators.
Step 2 - Run the Exchange Admin and create a new mailbox using the newly created user id as the Primary Windows NT Account.
Step 3 - On the Exchange Admin, go the the very top of the left panel, which is the Organization level, select the folder and click on the properties icon. There is 2 tabs, one General and the other Permissions. Go to Permission tab and click Add. Select the user id that you have created earlier and assign the user id as Service AccountAdmin.
Step 4 - Reboot the server
Step 5 - Install Veritas and when ask for Service Account, use the user id that you have created.
Step 6 - Once everything is done, which it should, you can go back to Exchange Admin and hide the Service Account (mailbox) from the address book to avoid user from sending any mail to it.

I have spend many hours solving this problem and i have actually documented it.

Good luck

Don't forget to un-install the previous Veritas Installation and reboot the system before starting the procedure.
