    Very slow network connection!

    Locked

    by jeremy.stanton ·

I am using a 10/100 PCI network card, but my file transfer speed is very very slow. It took 45 minutes to copy 35MB of files!

I have tried updating the drivers and using a different make of network card.

    Any ideas?

Is the cable “Known Good” and what are the specs on the rest of the network ?

      TCP/IP and Microsoft file sharing.

The cable was substituted but the problem remained.

I tried going through a hub and using a cross over cable to connect the two computers together without the hub.

      G’day,
Maybe its worth checking the network card properties on both machines. Go to the Advanced tab, if speed is set to Auto or 10, change both machines to 100.

Also a look at task manager to see if there are any background tasks using up resources.

      Cheers

Make sure you only have the network protocals you need. Simulate the transfer with only one protocal installed.

There are 2 very obscure answers to this problem. the first of which is that you should check all the PC’s in the network and verify that only the server is set for Browse Master.

The second is if your location has more than one server in it, you must make sure that you are only running 1 primary domain controller for the domain. This can be determined by running server manager on the server. If there is more than one, demote all but the original to backup domain or standalone servers. This should fix your problem.
