    very slow startup HP-Omnibook

I have an HP Omnibook, PIII/600, 128MBRAM and Windows 98 looks like halting every time I log-on. It takes approx. 4-5 minutes to get to the logon screen (using Novell Client, but even without it it takes the same amount of time). Everything is working fine after that, but it’s very frustrating.
I cannot recover the system from the original CD as I don’t have a CD-ROM drive on my HP. The logon was taking so long, ever since the beggining, when I installed win98 for the first time.
    Any suggestions/ideas ?

My guess is that there is a program that loads on boot that is looking for either a peripheral device (such as a scanner, external drive, camera, serial device, tape drive, etc.) or a network connection. (Even if you disable novell client, you might have a program or service looking for something on the network that isn’t there) What happenes is that windows waits for this program to initialize, and this program is waiting for a device or connection that isn’t there. The program doesn’t let windows continue until it times out.

Try booting up in safe mode. (By hitting the F8 key on boot and selecting safe mode from the menu.) It should be faster then. (If not it may be hardware or something else such as a compressed drive — those will really slow you down.) Other than that , run msconfig from “run” on the start menu and see what you have loading on boot. (Uncheck a program and reboot to see if that’s the holdup.) Look for anything that might be associated with a device or network connection. You may also check your networking properties to see if it is waiting for DHCP or an Internet gateway…

      HTH…

Thanks, doesn’t really help but I’m asking this question for the second time on techrep and nothing seems to work so at least I can reward the good intention 🙂

What you could also try (first answer brought the idea) is going to the dosprompt and typing in “net use”
Anything showing up is what your system is trying to connect to at boot.
Also check for anti-virus software. See if de-installing that bringsthe solution.
