The proper instalation of the video adapter driver under windows:
1. Either from Control Panel -> Display or Desktop Right Mouse Click -> Option, Display. Go to adapter and update driver. Following prompts select Standard VGA. Restart computer. Now, make sure that old drivers (non windows vga) are deleted from your system completely. Once that done, repeat the procedure this time selecting the drivers you wanted to install. It will prompt for restart. After restart try new settings.

What kind of video card you have?
Good luck

is the monitor a SVGA capable running 800x600?? Or have you check if your monitor setting in the display properties was set to standard 640x480. If your monitor is new, load the proper driver for it. if you can't get a driver set it as pnp monitor.
