Video Card upgrades

By lflanning ·
Does anyone have experience with Sony Vaio desktop units and installation of a NVIDIA Geforce FX 64 (128 mb of ram) video card. On board video to be disabled but Sony will not confirm hardware compatibility. These upgrades are being recommended in mass for a school site and I am reluctant to proceed without feedback on success. Thanks for input.

My first thought is what is driving the need for so much video card power?

Next, what model(s) Vaio?

Which version of Windows?

If you need the increased video power for CAD or graphics arts, you may need to upgrade the entire workstation.

I assume that these are PCI cards.
I would not install so powerful a card under Windows 95 or 98. And would be hesitant for Me.
Next, you will NEED to have a minimum of 256MB of RAM in systems that get the 128MB video cards.

If the need for the card is valid, I would pick at least 3 systems and perform a test upgrade to see if you have any compatibility issues.
