Video Restsrta PC

By Davieglas ·
When I click to play video files on the PC or from the web, my Win XP restarts. I DON'T have the option to restart ticked in My Computer->Properties->Advanced->Startup Options either. This is recent but can't think what has been done recently to change the config'. Have Radeon 9200 128MB video card. All ok in Device Manager, and Event Logs don't show anything obvious. Ran Virus and Spyware scans, all ok. Any ideas? David

Hi Davie

If this only happens when you are playing video files, try changing your default viewer... I assume you are using Windows Media Player...there are plenty of free viewers avialable from the net.

This will at least discount the possibility of a corrupt viewer program file.

Good luck
Gary

Pull out and reinsert the video card, making sure that it seats all the way down in the slot. Also, when you insert the screw to hold the card, make sure it doesn't slightly raise the card out of the slot on the other end.

If yours uses a PCI bus, try another slot if the above doesn't work.

If nothing works, try a known good video card.

Windows Media and Real Player restart PC when I attempt to play Video files, from PC or web. This suggested hardware, but Quick Time still plays Movie files ok, so would suggest not? I actually tried a System Restore. Got a "missing or corrupt windows/config/system file" message and couldn't boot. Had luckily made a drive image few days before. That worked fine, but didn't sort video problem. I use an AGP slot with AGP enabled in BIOS as Auto. Sys Info progs report AGP as not utilised. Driver update for AGP crashed system before. Don't want to flash BIOS - had failure before. Will clean out hardware and re-seat Video card just in case. Will report back in couple of days. Thanks for suggestions.

Eventually got round to cleaning PC and reseating Video Card. Still restarts computer when playing video files. Rolled back Win Media Player to version 9 - no change. Back updated to 10 with all Hotfixes etc. Having to use my laptop to watch any video clips. Not ideal if surfing the web. Only started happening about a month ago. Not clear from my own installation logs what could have caused this. Will Possibly try a fresh basic install on another drive sometime to assess whether it is a software thing. Too much on here to try with my main drive. Thanks for suggestions. David.

Sorted. Sorry for not advising earlier to those who offered help. Got some tipe from Real Player Help. Reduced Graphics Accelerator to Level 1, and got video back playing. However, seemed to stop ATI software from starting. Then uninstalled and reinstalled ATI drivers, and video now works fine with Acccelerator at full level. Many thanks for contributions. Davie
