Viewing AVI files

By michaelh ·
I'm having problems viewing certain .avi files with Microsoft Media Player (MMP) and Windows Media Player (WMP). I have a 64MB AGP Video card which I think is more than enough, and for some reason evertime I load it up with MMP, it'll only play thesound of the video, when I open it with WMP I get an error "Unable to download an appropriate decompressor" I checked support, and does not give me a definite answer. I know the video works on other systems. Any help is appreciative

You need to download and install all of the CODECs that are available for the WMP in order for the avi file to play properly. While you're at the Windows Update site, you may want to consider updating your IE to the latest version, 6.0, and doing a custom install which will give you the option(s) for the media player codecs as well as the macromedia flash plug in. When you're done updating\installing, make sure to go back to the update page and install critical updates and patches until you don't get any more pending after your rebooting.

Hope this helps.

A lot of avi files are being encoded using newer and newer DivX codecs. If the above answer doesn't work for you, you can go to www.divx.com/products/product_list.php?typeid=2 and download the DivX412Bundle. It'll update your codecs. It also includes a free avi player.
