I have a website. Obviously if u just type in the name of it it displays the index.htm file in the root directory. i also have other sub folders containing the relevant grouped files. if the user types in www.website.com/foldername/ then internetexplorer displays the contents of it "Index of /foldername". If i try this on big sites however i know that it displays a page of something like "not authorised to view this page".

how do i make my sub folders the same. so that people dont havethe authorisation and cant view the contents of it? i know there are permissions on files and folders that you can change. but all they seem to control is if the three different groups: owner, group and others hav permission to read, write and execute. do i have to alter these or do something else?

Please note that:
1. When you see 'Index of /foldername' in Internet Explorer is why because you Web Server is configured to allow users 'browse' your website, you have to change your server configurations for that.

2. To display a message like "Not authorized to view this page" You must use some sort of dynamic content language like ASP, JSP or Coldfusion, from which you can use cookies or session variables to authenticate your users.

3. You need some expertise in dynamic web languagesHope it helps.

This is a server configuration. I assume your server is running Internet Information Services (IIS). ASSUMING YOU HAVE ACCESS TO IIS, what you need to do is go to the IIS console, select the website, right click on the folder you want to change, andselect properties. This will bring up a window with the folder settings. You can set the content displayed there.

1) If you want it to default to an HTML file or somwhere else whenever a user types the folder name, then set the first box on top:
"When connecting to this resource, the content should come from"

Select the option: a redirection to a URL

and check the box "The client will be sent to the exact URL entered above"

2) If you want to disable directory browsing, make sure the box "Directory Browsing is disabled"

3) if you want to allow only certain people, you go to the "directory security" TAB under properties, and set the permissions appropiately (which is beyond the scope of this explanation)

---------------------------------------------

If you dont have direct control of the server (hosting services), then you need to write an e-mail to tech support and tell them what you want to do, they will do it for you.

BY THE WAY, in case you are not familiar with IIS, the console can be located under control panel\Administrative tools (Assuming your server runs windows 2000 and up)

Good luck!

In point number 2, the name of the box is "Directory Browsing", not "Directory Browsing is disabled". I closed quotation marks in the wrong place, lol.
