virtual memory!!!

By mightyyoungfai ·
i have a pc (p4 1.6ghz, 256mb ram and 40gb hdd) just freshly install to windows 98 with lotus smart suite v9.6, lotus notes r5, norton antivirus corperate edition v7.6 and some ms. office viewer program.

The problem is that i cant run scandisk/defrag in windows mode even in safe mode. I kept running into the this error message telling me that my system doesnt have enough memory to perform that operation and ask me to quite some program to free some memory.

What you need is an old fashioned DOS setup in your config.sys with a virtual drive setup like a recovery disk would use. Here's some of the commands for the config.sys file, you wuill need to find where the files are and modify for your pc.

DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
DOS=HIGH,UMB
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS
DEVICEHIGH=C:\DOS\RAMDRIVE.SYS 14000 128 150 /E

You may or may not need the noems on the emm386 line, I can't remember whether thats for no extended or expanded memory.
Hope that helps

One other suggetion for when in safe mode hit
<CTRL><ALT><DEL>
Should bring up a close program box, close everything but explorer which is the windows shell and then try scandisk.
Good Luck

Have you installed any Windows updates since installing 98?

If so, did that include IE6?

I have seen IE6 cause a serious memory leak in W98.

The 'best' solution, is to go back to IE5.5

A work-around is to install a memory manager such asMemTurbo.

You can check memory usage by running resource meter. (Programs / Accessories).

Another idea, is to update your motherboard drivers.
The default W98 drivers do not know the newer chip-sets and may not be accessing the RAM or the system buss effectively.

Try running scandisk and defrag in safe mode. As soon as the computer boots, press and hold down the CTRL key until the menu appears on the screen, then select Safe Mode. This will prevent most non-system programs from loading, one of which may be hogging your memory.

Try This: Uninstall Norton Antivirus Corperate Edition, reboot, then try scandisk and defrag. Windows 98 and High-End Norton and Norton Suites sometimes conflict. Which Win98 version are you using? 98 or 98SE?
