Virtual Private Networking

By jcroynhp ·
I am in need of assistance with configuring a VPN. I am running NT Server 4 (svc. pak 6a), Proxy Server 2.0(svc pak 1), and Routing and Remote Access Svc. I have a cable ISP. When connecting the remote network, or when the remote network attempts tolog into my network, i get "Authenticating User" and then it eventually times out. Please advise if you can help, or know where I can find help. The MS website hasn't really helped me. Thanks.

Have you added the remote computer you want to virtual private network into the server manager? If you don't have the name of the station you want to connect as a workstation or server in the domain it will refuse connection.

Check with your ISP to make sure they support VPN connections. I ran into that problem trying to remotely manage a server in Vegas from Ohio. They had to switch to a different ISP that supported PPTP extensions.

We have configured thesame setup in our office. Here's what you should do. Ask your ISP if they support VPN. You could ask them if they can have your users identified as VPN users and be automatically be brought to your server.

If your users are being disconnected, try reinstalling the service pack, after you install RAS or any major service for that matter.

Just adding to the previous answer. Believe it or not make sure you are not logged on to another workstation on the network. As simple as it is we see it all the time.
