My computer sometimes starts up, but most of the time goes to a blank screen, or a multi-colored screen. However, if i'm lucky to get it started up it doesn't last long. The screen flashes like it's turning off, then comes back on and is frozen. I can restart it and sometimes get back to the screen, but it just does it again. What can i do to get rid of this possible virus, or at least allow myself enough time to copy my files from the computer?

If it is a Virus, it would be a boot sector virus which loads the virus program upon booting, to rid you of this problem you would need to reset the mbr by gaining access to the Windows Recovery console, this can be done by inserting your Windows XP cd and pressing the key that brings up the Console(I dont remember which one but it should be displayed during the setup). When you enter the console just type help to bring up a list of commands, if i remember the command to look for is "fixmbr". If thats not it, your guess is as good as mine.
