Virus ????

By computercare ·
When I try to click on an icon on my desktop, the icon jumps. I have Norton 2001, and it is not detecting a virus. Could this be a virus? How do I tell which virus this is? Any help would be big.

This does sound like a virus. It could be a nuisance virus or something more serious. Either way, you'd better get rid of it.

You indicate that you are running Norton 2001, but you didn't mention whether you have been keeping the virus definition files up to date. It is imperative that you update virus definition files OFTEN -- especially right now!

I suggest that you go to the URL below and read up on what they have to say. There is a utility within Norton AV 2001 that sends questionable files to Norton; but first you will have to run a full scan with the very latest definition files -- scanning ALL files rather than the auto defaults. Now here's the URL (be sure to remove any blank spaces that might be truncated into this patch):

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/what.to.do.if.you.suspect.that.your.computer.is.infected.with.a.virus.worm.or.trojan.html

Good luck.

Be sure to use all three lines of the URL, placing the periods exactly where they are shown above.

Greetings,

That doesn't sound like a virus to me. It sounds more like one of those "prank" programs. I've seen moving icons, melting desktops, and "cracking" monitors. (Some of them are actually quite funny.)

Look in the Add/Remove programs inyour Control Panel.

Look in the Start Programs Menu.

Run Sysedit from the Run line. (Pay particular attention to the autoexec.bat file)

See if there are any "strange" looking programs running.

Does anyone else have access to your computer? Do they usualy display a warped sense of humor?

That's my guess.

Regards,

Maxwell

I removed a virus with that description not too long ago. By the time it does that to your icons, it has been there a while...here is the link...http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.magistr.24876@mm.html
(remove any spaces inthe URL)
About two thirds of the way down the page is a little demonstration of what it does. Take a look, if it is similar, that is your virus.
Good luck!

Mike

Yup, this is virus.

Check couple of your txt files, if you`ll find such text inside : "YOUARESHIT"

it means that you`re infected with W32.Magistr.24876@mm. If the computer has been infected for two months, then on odd days the desktop icons are repositioned whenever the mouse pointer approaches, giving the impression that the icons are "running away" from the mouse:

No doubt about it, it is a virus. I have removed a couple of them. It seems to happen lately with the new variant of the Magistr virus 399**??. You must make sure virus def files are up to date (sometime we think we are updating and we aren't) then scan with Norton (make sure ALL files instead of just program files is selected under manual config.
