First in your internet connection, enable the xp firewall, (2x the connection, properties, advance tab, protect my computer from the internet)
install xp sp1, then install the security patches via www.windowsupdate.com

in the case you need to reinstall xp, follow these steps before installing additional software.

Try an online scanner for free and see if it identifies the virus, it sounds like an OLD virus and I can't remember the name.

http://tinyurl.com/2xis Trend Micro's House Call online scan.

Once you have identified the virus, you can search for a removal tool. ie. 'klez removal tool'

This will bring back (probably from Norton)a free repair and registry fix tool.
You may need to reinstall your icons after this, but it will stop the virus from running again on boot.

You either have it in your startup file (START>RUN> type 'MSCONFIG'with no quotes > ENTER) or in one of your registry files (which the cleaner will find).

Norton was probably discabled just as most AV programs would be. In future, if you find you have problems with Norton, don't be surprised, it is a resource hog. If problems with Norton persist, download AVG free edition from http://www.grisoft.com and use ADAWARE to remove spyware and ads (http://www.lavasoft.nu)

post back if you need more help.

Good luck,
OM

Above two answers are correct.

Before you do any of those steps, also DISABLE your system restore... Right click MY Computer -->Properties --> System restore --> DISABLE or turn off (can't recall).

If your system restore is enabled, everything will come back just the way it was.

Run the adaware cleaner, trend micros online virus checker, move those font files back, reboot, re-enable system restore.
