What methods are you using right now to stop viruses?

Some basic steps:
-Use managed antivirus software.
-It should run on a server
-It should automatically check for updates
-Because the server manages the clients, they will be updated through the server
-Be sure it is integrated with your email or email server
-Have a strong firewall
-Limit employee's access to floppies or other external media

I would call McAfee and Symantec and get a quote from both for virus removal and software for for your company's network. take the quote to your boss and get it fixed right away.

The suggestions provided by previous posters were good, but it sounds like you may have more of a policy implementation and enforcement issue. Definitely implement virus scanning & protection on your servers and have it deployed to users workstations automatically without giving them the option to disable or change settings.

In regards to policy - you may want to suggest implementing and acceptable use policy and set the terms of the policy to no private software/shareware/games etc.. essentially nothing which is not approved by your company goes on the servers. Servers should be monitored for such activity and any suspicious files removed after notifying the end user.

Limit access to upload files to the servers to specific types of files as well and limit the amount of space provided for storage. All these help in prevention of "unkown viruses" bieng unleashed on your servers and in your IT environment.

In short security is everybody's responsibility and implementing appropriate use policies and conducting end user training go a long way in helping to cut down on the damage control and repair work of cleaning viruses and restoring IT integrity.

You need antivirus on the server. It needs to be a good antivirus.

Not one that tells you there is a virus, then explains that it can't do anything about it.

The antivurus on the server should download all updates and distribute the updates to the client machines.

The best solutions on the market, period.
